We have been asked by a number of people, both professionals and interested amateurs if we would run a day on “Success in RHS Show Gardens”. Here is a bit more about how it might look- I would welcome expressions of interest so that I can judge whether to go ahead with it.
The plan will be to run a day at our lovely offices in Penn in February or March (to be finalised based on the level of interest!). The goal will be to make the day informal and with plenty of time to interact with a range of professionals all with extensive experience of designing and building RHS show gardens, it will be of interest to those looking to create a show garden themselves, seeking advice on the application process, or simply keen to get a “behind the scenes” look at them.
The line up (to be confirmed!) :
Peter Harket– leader of the Crocus Build team, responsible for more RHS Chelsea Gold medals than he can remember (including 2 in 2013), and many “best in show” gardens.
Ruth Marshall-lead designer of the Cool Gardens design team who designed the Gold Medal and “Best Summer Garden” award winner at this years Hampton Court
Carl Asquith and Phil Lindfield– Leaders of the Cool Gardens build operation- responsible for the our own Hampton Court and Chelsea Gardens as well as Gardens at both Hampton Court and Chelsea for other designers and for Peter Harkets team
Peter Reader, Jo Hanslip and Stephen Ryan– Successful first time medal winners at RHS Hampton Court- all with fantastic gardens when almost just out of Design School
day will look something like this:
10.00 Arrival, coffee, informal chat
10.30 Introduction to RHS show gardens, key points in the application process, getting the design right, judging considerations
11.30 A Chelsea Build– overview by Peter Harket and Phil Lindfield
12.30 Buffet lunch and chat
1.30 Hampton Court Builds-3-4 short case studies- to include:
- Highs and lows
- Getting the best out of the build team
- Plants and planting
- Finances/sponsorship and costs
3.30 Wrap up and questions
Our friends at Tendercare nurseries, which is very nearby, are also keen to offer a walk and talk at some point in the day so we will schedule this in before or afterwards to suit the timing and daylight!
